Etymology

Probably 'the curtilage of the servant(s)', v. cnapa , toft . Formally, the OE  masc. pers.n. Cnapa or the ON  masc. pers.n. Knappi could constitute the specific of this place-name, but the survival of a Knaptofte in Great Glen (Lei 485) suggests that this was a recurring appellative.
