Etymology

Ashpools 1771 (Ashpoole 1694, c. 1715, c. 1720, Ashpoole furlong l. 17, 1700, Ashpoole forlong 1745 (v. furlang), v. æsc; surviving forms indicate pōl 1 as the generic, but this may well be one of a number of places where poles or stakes of ash - wood were got, v. pāl and cf. Ashpole Spinney in Nevill Holt infra, Ash Pole Spinney in Leesthorpe (Lei 2 239) and in Cosby, Guthlaxton Hundred)
