Etymology

'Ingwar's farmstead, village', v. . The pers.n. Ingwar is ODan (ON  Ingvarr ). The DB form in Gerberie is due to metanalysis, the initial in of the name having been mistaken for the MLat  prep. in . Its -berie spelling of the generic is erratic and does not indicate an earlier p.n. in -byrig (dat.sg. of OE  burh 'a fortified place'), v. the discussions of Asfordby and neighbouring Quenby.

Ingarsby was depopulated in 1469 to make a monastic grange for the Abbey of St Mary de Pratis, Leicester. Its land, comprising some 1100 acres, was given over to sheep. The late prefix Old ~ distinguishes its site from that of New Ingarsby infra .
