Etymology

Probably 'Kátr's farmstead, village', v. tūn . The pers.n. Kátr (Káts gen.sg.) is Scand, presumably an original by-name from the adj. kátr 'glad', v. SPNLY 163. Typical of Leics. p.ns. is loss of t in the group -ston in forms from the 16th cent. onwards.
