Etymology

'Gauti's farmstead, village', v. , cf. Goadby in Gartree Hundred. The ON  pers.n. Gauti either represents short forms of names in Gaut - or is an original by-name meaning 'a man from Gautland', v. SPNLY 98.The DB form Goltebi is an AN inverted spelling. Ante-consonantal l was frequently vocalized to u . The substitution of th for t in late 12th and 13th cent. forms is the result of AN  orthographical interchange between the symbols th and t for etymological t .

Ada de Quartremars , the last of the Quartremars family, lords of the manor of Goadby, married Gaufridus Maureward in the reign of Henry III. The Maureward family is recorded as holding Goadby from Galfridus Maureward , Gaufridus Maureward 1247 Ass to as late as Thomas Maureward 1428 FA. The village lies some one and a half miles northwest of Waltham on the Wolds, hence ~ iuxta Waltham 1308, 1346.
