Etymology

'The farmstead, village near a fortification' or 'the fortified farmstead, village' (later '~ on the high open ground or wold country'), v. burh-tūn, wald . Note the affixes with MLat  super and AFr  sur , both meaning 'on, upon'; and v. uppan .
