Etymology

'Farmstead or village near a fortification' or 'farmstead with a palisade', v. burh-tūn and Barnewerc in f.ns. (b) infra . Burton Lazars stands on a hill-top at a suitable site for an early defensive work. A Hospital of St Lazarus for lepers was founded here c.1138 by Roger de Mowbray, of which extensive earthworks remain. Peter Burdet held one carucate of land in Burton in 1242 Fees and part of the fee of Pantouf was also here in 1242 ib. Land belonging to the Hospital was granted to John Dudley, Viscount Lisley, in 1535.
