Etymology

'The farmstead, village by the brook', v. brōc , tūn . The stream from which the settlement took its name is Dalby Brook which forms the county boundary here. Upper Broughton lies beyond the boundary in Notts. Nether Broughton is at the edge of the Vale of Belvoir, hence ~ in Valle (v. val ) and is adjacent to Wartnaby and Long Clawson. Its site is some 100 ft lower than that of Upper Broughton, hence Nethyr ~ (v. neoðera ). Note also the suffixed MLat  inferior 'lower'.
