watefordhill' 1352 (v. hyll; perh. to be compared with Watford, Nth 75 and Hrt 103, both of which may be derived either from OE   (ge) wæd' a place for wading' or OE   wāð' hunting'; DEPN s. n. Watford (Nth) suggests the alternative possibility that the original name was ON   vað' a ford' (or OE   (ge) wæd Scandinavianized) to which was added an explanatory ford)
