Etymology

Nedgates (le netegates 1332, netgate 1352 bis, Neate gates 1601, 1605, 1625, Neatgates 1629 (1712), v. nēat; the recurring pl. form suggests that rather than' the cattle road' (with gata), this may be an early style of the later cow-gate' an allotment of pasture for a single cow', v. Field 127)
