Etymology

'Beautiful view', v. bel 2 , beau , vedeir . An OFr place-name, in origin identical with the ModE  sb. belvedere 'a summer-house erected on an eminence for the purpose of viewing the surrounding scene'. Belvoir Castle crowns an eastern headland of the Wolds, with commanding views to the north and east across the Vale of Belvoir. It was founded in the late 11th cent. by Robert de Todenei, standard bearer of William the Conqueror. It is noteworthy that while the older bel occurs in the earliest spellings of the name, beu /beau is also present in forms from the middle of the 12th cent. onwards.
