Etymology

'(At) the grove', v. b(e)aru (b(e)arwe dat.sg.). The dominant form of the p.n. is the OE dat.sg. b (e )arwe . Most likely, it was originally preceded by the OE  prep, æt 'at', the expression for 'homestead' c 'village' being understood (cf. Æt Bearwe c.890 (10) OEBede, Barrow upon Humber, L 215). Barrow stands on the river Soar, hence affixe with MLat  super 'on, upon'; and v. uppan .
