Historical Forms

  • æt Haddedune 951 Thorney c.1300–25
  • Adone 1086 DB
  • Haddune c.1150 Thorney c.1300–25
  • Haddon 1286 Ass 1316 FA 1327 SR
  • Haddon juxta Yakesley c.1370 Linc

It is difficult to know how much stress should be laid on the Hadde - of the form in the Thorney Register. Probably it should be taken definitely into account and the first element be taken as the pers. name Hædda . Cf. Headdandun (KCD 544).Apart from this we should have taken it as OE  hæðdun, 'heath covered hill,' a very common form of p.n.
