Etymology

This is probably from Mæðelgār -rīð , 'Mathelgar stream,' v. rīð , and cf. Sawtry supra 195. For the earlier stages of the development of the name, cf. Maugersbury (Gl) from mæðel - gares byrig (BCS 882).
