Etymology

'Folc's enclosure' v. worþ . Folc is not on independent record in OE but is a regular shortened form of OE  names in Folc - and is found both in its strong and weak form in folcanstan (BCS 408) and folces stan (ib. 813) for Folkestone (K). The numerous Fulk - forms are to be accounted for by the influence of the common French name Fulk , itself ultimately of the same origin.
