Etymology

This wood lay between Whittlesey Mere and King's Delph. It is clearly from OE  hragra , 'heron,' and holt, hence 'heron- wood' (Stevenson MSS). Cf. Rawreth (Ess) which is from OE  hragra -hyð , 'heron-hithe.'
