Etymology

'Hroc's grove,' from the pers. name Hrōc rather than from the bird-name. This pers. name is not on record in OE but can be inferred with certainty from such place-names as Ruckinge (K) and Rockingham (Nth), and the corresponding ON  Hrókr is well established (cf. MLR, xiv. 241). Cf. Roxton, Ruxox supra 64, 74.
