Smallford is Smalford 1272–7WAM , 1427Cassio , Smalleford plasshe 1436, Smalfordwent 1437 ib., Smallforth c. 1480 ECP.'Narrow ford,' v. smæl . The ford was probably that still marked near Parkgate Corner (1″). plasshe is the dialectal plash , 'muddy pool.' went is ME  went , 'way, path.'
