Etymology

Childwick [olim tʃilək] is Childewicam 1077–93 (14th) Gesta, Childewich 12th AD ii, Childewic 1204 Cur, 1228 Pat, 1232 Cl, Childewik (e )1228FF , 1248Ass , Childwic (a )1165 P, 1249 Ch, Cheldewyk 1500 Pat, Chillock al. Chillwick 1703 MarLic. 'Dairy farm of or belonging to the cilds ,' v. cild , wic . The manor was granted to St Albans Abbey by Ailwinus Niger and Ailfleda his wife t. Ethelred (Gesta i, 54). The cild in this case refers to the young monks, cf. the statement in Gesta (loc. cit .): “…a pueris trahit locus voca- bulum, quia ad alimenta monachorum juniorum, lacticiniis alendorum, conferebatur, unde Childewica nuncupatur.”
