Etymology

High Canons. Cf. le Canons ground 1386Rental , Cannons in Shenley 1684FF , High Commons Wood c. 1840TA . This name recalls the grant of land in Shenley to the Prior and canons of St Bartholomew's, Smithfield, in the early 13th century (VCH ii, 271). Canonbury and Canons Park (Mx) have a similar history.The TA spelling is probably corrupt. See further Catherine Bourne supra 2.
