Historical Forms

  • Tinele 13th Wymondley
  • Tingley Wood 1818 EnclA

Etymology

Tingley Wood is Tinele 13thWymondley , Tingley Wood 1818EnclA . This is a difficult name, for the forms are scanty and late.It is just possible that the first element is OE  tȳned , 'enclosed,' hence 'fenced clearing.' Cf. Tinely (PN NbDu 197), earlier Tynedley (1268 Ipm), which may have this history rather than the one suggested in PN NbDu s. n .
