Etymology

Kettle Green is Ketwelgrene 1404AD , 1431 Cl. The forms are too late for any certainty, but the first element may well be the OE  cȳta , 'kite,' which would appear in Hertfordshire as kete in ME. Hence 'kite spring,' v. wielle .
