Etymology

Probably 'heath clearing' (v. hæð , leah ), though 'Headda 's clearing' is just possible. Cf. Hadlow Down (PN Sx 395) and Headdandun (KCD 544). The manor was early granted to the monks of Walden Abbey (Ess).
