Etymology

Westland Green is Westeldonwod 1382, Westilden , Westeldon 1412, Westildengrene 1461Cecil , Wesledon 1572, Westledon 1616 ParReg, Weseldon Green 1669 Sess. The forms are too late for any certainty. As the place lies on a hill to the west of Little Hadham the first element may be 'west hill down,' with the common Hertfordshire e for OE y (v. Introd. xxv) and hyll .
