Etymology

This name represents the manor of Langley held by the family of Ralph Chaineduit (12th AD ii). Other spellings of the family name are Chendeduit 1215 ClR, Cheyndedut 1223–52 AD i, Cheindedut 1230 Bracton, Chendut 1238FF , 1255Ass , all with reference to King's Langley. Shendish is thus for Chendut 's . For other examples of the feudal addition to a place-name alone remaining, cf. Chenies (PN Bk 221) and Virley (PN Ess 323).
