Friars Wood

Early-attested site in the Parish of Kings Langley

Etymology

Friars Wood (6″). Cf. Ye Fryers 1598 N, recalling the House of the Friars Preachers in Langley, established in 1312 (Pat).Cf. house and site of the Black Friars of Langley 1539 LP. In 1312 (Pat) there is mention of the place called Little Loundr ' which they (the Friars Preachers) occupy . This gives us a very early example of the place-name Little London, noted in PN Sx 11, 255 and in PN Sr 220. It was probably jocular in origin.
