Etymology

The most reliable early spelling is that from KCD 1354. This, and the almost complete absence of later spellings with medial e , point to a compound of OE  mund 'protection' and denu. In Mundon (PN Ess 220), the compound may possibly refer to a sheltering hill and we may have here a similar compound with denu , 'valley.' Munden Furnival or Great Munden was held by Gerard de Furnivall ' in 1200 (Cur), Munden Freville or Little Munden by Richard de Frevill ' in 1278 (Ass ).
