Etymology

'Æmma 's spring,' v. wielle . Aemma would be a pet form for such an OE  name as Ēanmær or Ēanmund . According to tradi- tion Emma, wife of Canute, is supposed to have given her name to the well just below the church, but the place-name is undoubtedly far older than that. Cf. EHAS i, 33.
