Etymology

Beechwood Ho is Bechewood alias Saynt Gyles in le Wood 1573 FF and is on the site of the small priory of St Giles in the Wood, founded t. Stephen by Roger de Toni. The site was then known as ecclesiae Sancti Egidii de Wodechurch , Wodecherche (Dugd iv, 299). Note also priorissa Sci Egidii de Flamstede (1242FF ), priorat ' monalium Sci Egidii de Bosco juxta Flamsted (1535 VE).See further Priors Spring infra 33.
