Burnham Green

Early-attested site in the Parish of Digswell

Etymology

Burnham Green is Burnhamstret 1380, Burnehamgrene , Burnhamlane 1409, Burnamgrene , Brenamgrene , Burnamfeld 1451Ct .The forms are too late for any certain etymology. The first element cannot be the OE  burna, 'stream,' as the hamlet is far from any water. The whole name may be manorial in origin and take its name from some settler from Burnham (Bk). Cf. Rableyheath supra 111.
