Historical Forms

  • Orgall Hall t.Ed6 Chantry

Etymology

Organ Hall is Orgonehalle 1272, Orgonhalle 1290WAM , Orgenhall 1501, Orgar Hall 1518–29 ECP, Orgall Hall t. Ed 6 Chantry. The second element is clearly 'hall,' v. heall . The first element is difficult. It may be that it is the common word organ (ME  orgone ). Perhaps the hall had chimneys which suggested organ -pipes or it may have had some other link with that instrument. The precise reason for the name is lost beyond recovery.
