Etymology

Wycomb, Wickham 1248Ass , 1838TA , Wikham 1361 Ipm. The name refers to a piece of land where Roman remains, now no longer visible, have been found (grid 144–028202, 6″ O.S. no. 27 SE); it is OE  wīc-hām which usually means 'homestead with a dairy-farm' or the like. It is possible, however, that as in one or two instances of OE  wīc-tūn the wīc denotes the Roman vicus (cf. EPN ii, 263–4).
