Etymology

Stidcot, Stut (e )cote (brigge ), Stitcotesbrigge 1378 Works, Stidcott , Styd (e )cott , Styd (e )cot (e )1549FF , 1588 FF, 1592Eg 60d, 1640 Inq, Stidcocke lane c. 1560Surv , Stedecote 1574, 1594 FF, Stidcote fylde , Stidfylde , Studfeld 1592Eg 62d, Stidcotes feld c. 1603TRMB . The first el. is possibly OE  styde, a variant of stede 'place, farm' with the earliest Stit -, Stut - forms being assimilated to the following voiceless -c -, but since stede does not normally appear as a first el., we may have some such word as OE  studu 'post, pillar, buttress' (with fronting of -u - to -i - before the dental, cf. Phonol. § 29). 'Cottage supported by posts', v. cot .
