Etymology

Ford, Forda (m )1154–89 RBE, 1229 Ch, 1237 Fees, la Forde Hy 3 Ipm, 1287Ass , Ford (e )1227 Ch, 1287Ass , 1289 Abbret passim to 1718 PR 4. v. ford 'ford', here one carrying the Tewkesbury-Stow road over the Windrush. It is clearly identical with Holeforde 1185 Templar (the Templars owned this parish) and Holforde 1354 Inq (a hamlet of Temple Guiting), which gave its name to Holford Hundred (2supra ) and was the source of the local surname Hol(e)ford 1204 P, 1248Ass 4d. The ford was in a deep hollow below the hamlet (v. hol 1 'hollow').
