Etymology

'Stone well or spring', v. stān , wella ; there are several springs in Stowell Park. But this name, like Stowell (W 326), might denote 'a stream with a stone-built channel'. The later forms Stawell and Stowell arise from the well-evidenced loss of -n - before labial con- sonants (cf. Stafford Mills 141supra , Phonol. § 37c ).
