Etymology
'Abba's river-crossing', from the OE pers.n. Abba and (ge)lād, a crossing of the Severn near its division into the East and West Channels; cf. Lower Lode 65supra . The medial -i - in some early spellings is a vestige of OE ge - (cf. Phonol. § 50). The court is a large house.
