Etymology

'Sǣwine's fortified place', from the OE  pers.n. Sǣwine and burh; beside the DB Svine - and the 1279 Sevenes -, this is regularly contracted here to Seine -. The burh may refer to the remains of ancient entrenchments on the higher ground just south of the village near the church and Buckle Street, cf. Wall Fm and Oldeburidich ' (infra ).
