Etymology

Edge, Edgehill Fm, (la ) Egge 1300 Ipm, 1324FF , Egge in Payneswyk 1360 Ipm, Vnderrege Hy 8Rent , Edge 1539, 1593FF , Edge als. Rudge 1779 Rudder 595, Rugge 1328 Banco, Rudghill 1544 LP. v. ecg 'escarpment'. The secondary form Rudge , is doubtless due to a wrong analysis of such expressions as 'under edge', and association with hrycg 'ridge' (cf. Phonol. § 45).
