Etymology

'Farmstead associated with Ot(t)a', v. ing 4 , tūn . OE  Ot (t )a is not recorded but is known from such p.ns. as Otanhyrst 811 BCS 339 or Ottanford 909 ib 627 (cf. Totford Sr 211). Ekwall suggests that Otta is a hypocoristic form of dithematic names in Ōht - (Ōhthere , etc.), as is the recorded Ōhta (Redin 77). The spellings in -don may be due to some confusion with Oddington (O 233), which contains the same pers.n. with dūn 'hill'. On the later form in Od - cf. Phonol. § 40 (a ).
