Etymology

Wainlode Ford, Wainlode Hill, Weynlodebrugg '1378 Works, Waynelodus Brugge 1424 GlR, Wayneloode 1575TRMB , Waynelodes hill 1606Dep , Wainlode hill 1577 M, Wainloads Hill 1766GR 142. 'Wagon river-crossing', v. wægn , (ge)lād, cf. Lower Lode (65supra ). This was presumably a crossing of the Severn to Hasfield Ham at Wainlode Ford. The bridge itself is a small one across the Chelt at its entry to the Severn (Rudder 47).
