Etymology

'Wooded hill-side near a wet meadow', v. wisc , wisse , hangra .The first el. is not certain, but its spellings are similar to those of Wisley (Sr 155); OE  wisse itself occurs in Westley (153infra ) and is the more likely here. It refers to a farm by the stream called Holy Brook. On the form -hunger cf. Phonol. § 5.
