Etymology

'Stony clearing', v. stān , lēah . It is called 'King's' (Lat  regis ) to distinguish it from Leonard Stanley (201infra ), because the manor was ancient demesne of the crown, held of the king by Tovi before and after the Conquest (DB); it continued to be held of the king (1285 FA ii, 243, 1347 Ipm); Henr ' from Henry III.
