Etymology
Madeley (lost), Medlee 1144Lanth 2 19d, Methlegh 1234 Cl, Madley 1535 VE, Longmaddeley , the Maddeleylane 1542 GlR, Longemadeley 1543MinAcct , Great Madlies 1630 Inq. 'Clearing used for mowing grass', v. mǣð , lēah . It was associated with Llanthony and the name survives in Madleiz Rd. near Monk Meadow Dock on the west side of the Bristol road to the south of the city; the fields Upper & Lower Madleys 1839TA 103 (fields nos. 107–8) are at grid point 143–824174 on the site of the Wagon Works.
