Etymology

'Farmstead associated with Forthelm', v. -ing 4 , tūn . The pers.n. is OE  Forþhelm . As in Brickhampton (120infra ), the name was adapted to the common p.n. type in -hampton which often inter- changes in later times with -ington , as in the spellings of Sevenhampton or Brockhampton (i, 177, 178 supra ); cf. also the reduction in Badminton (iii, 24infra ).
