Etymology

Castiard (lost), (valle ) Castiart , Castiard Hy 1, Hy 2 Monast, 1227 Ch, c. 1275For , Casteyerd , vallem de Castiardi c. 1275 ib, the name of the valley in which Flaxley stood. This name, Professor Jackson suggests, could be from a PrWelsh  Castein-iarth meaning 'chestnut hill' or 'chestnut-enclosure'. The place is probably to be identified with Chestnuts Hill & Chestnuts Inclosure (221supra ) 1 mile south-west of the abbey and the latter could be a translation of the Welsh name or vice-versa.
