Etymology

'Farmstead near the thorn-pool', v. þorn (which often loses -n - in compounds, cf. Phonol. § 37b ), mere , tūn (Ekwall); no pool is to be seen today, but there is mention of a stagnum molendini or mill-pool in 1182 WinchLB i, 197. The change of initial th - to f - is dialectal (Phonol. § 41b ). The earlier spellings of this p.n. are difficult to keep apart from those of Tormarton (iii, 56infra ).
