Etymology

Weir Green & Weir Ho, Dunywere in Ellemore 1392 Ipm, El(le)moreswere 1395Ass , 1396 Works, Wear Farm 1830 M. Two old weirs on the Severn are referred to in the spellings, one opposite Duni Ho in Minsterworth (iii, 163infra ) and the other further upstream near Elmore itself, v. wer ; the fishing weirs in the Severn were built of stakes placed closely together (cf. 1358 Inq 374).
