Etymology

Stafford's Bridge, Stovenebrugge 13 Glouc i, 271–2, Stanforde 1327SR (p), Staffords Bridge 1830 M. 'The stone ford or bridge', v. stān , ford , brycg . Stovene - is probably for Stonene - (a ME variant of stǣnen 'stony'). On the loss of -n - before labials cf. Phonol. § 37 (c ) and Stafford Mills (141infra ).
