The Oak
Early-attested site in the Parish of Down Ampney
Etymology
The Oak, 1830 M. It has been suggested that this place rather than Aust (iii, 127infra ) was the site of Bede's Augustinaes Ác (ii, 2) 'on the borders of the Hwicce and the West Saxons', the oak where St Augustine first met the leaders of the British church (cf. Plummer, Bede , ii, 74). But there is nothing to establish the identity except that possibly this region generally would be on the southern border of the territory of the Hwicce.
