Etymology

'Enclosure of the people of Dæggel or Dæccel', v. -ingas (gen.plur. -inga ), worð . The OE  pers.n. Dæggel would be a derivative in -el of a hypocoristic form of some such pers.n. as Dægbald , Dæghelm , etc. (as that suggested for Dagnall in Bk 94), and Dæccel would be a similar -el derivative of the OE  Dæcca suggested for Dagenham (Ess 91). Some p.ns. in Dag - have regular early spellings with Dak - (as Dagenham itself) which becomes Dag - with voicing of intervocalic -k - as in Bragenham (Bk 83) or Wigginton (YN 14).The spellings Dakelingwrth ' and Dachyngwrthe suggest that this might be the case with Daglingworth. The name of this folk, the Dæcce - lingas , appears also in the surname of Margaret de Dagelingstrete (GlR no. 382), who is also called de Coueleg (ib no. 378) from Cowley 6 miles north. Here the 'street' is Ermin Street (v. strǣt ).
